Dementia & Alzheimers HomeCare
The term 'dementia' is used to describe the symptoms that occur when the brain is affected by specific diseases and conditions, including Alzheimer's disease, stroke and many other rarer conditions.
Symptoms of dementia include loss of memory, confusion and problems with speech and understanding. Dementia is progressive, which means the symptoms will gradually get worse. How fast dementia progresses will depend on the individual. Each person is unique and will experience dementia in their own way.
Symptoms of dementia include:
- Loss of memory − for example, forgetting the way home from the shops, or being unable to remember names and places, or what happened earlier the same day.
- Mood changes − particularly as parts of the brain that control emotion are affected by disease. People with dementia may also feel sad, frightened or angry about what is happening to them.
- Communication problems − a decline in the ability to talk, read and write.
Dementia Care
Runway HomeCare is here to help. We can help by providing carers that:
- Are flexible and tolerant
- take the time to listen, have regular chats, and enjoy being with the person
- find things to do together
All members of the Runway HomeCare team receive specific training in caring for people with dementia and related conditions. Staff members also receive training on how to deal with difficult and challenging behaviours. Our clients and their families can be sure that all Ruwnway HomeCare staff will have the skills and competancies needed to deliver care at the highest level, at all times.
Our carers are trained to know
- What's in a name?
- Our sense of who we are is closely connected to the names we call ourselves. Our carers know to address the person with dementia in a way that the person recognises and prefers.
- Respect cultural values
- Our carers are trained and advised on the person's cultural or religious background, and any rules and customs, to anyone from a different background so that they can behave accordingly.
- Act with courtesy
- Many people with dementia have a fragile sense of self-worth; our carers know it's especially important that people continue to treat them with courtesy, however advanced their dementia.
- Respect privacy
- Our carers will ensure that the person's right to privacy is respected
